Is the Galaxy Fold 4 Worth Buying if I Have a Fold 3?

With the announcement of the new model, owners of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 want to know if it’s worth buying the Galaxy Z Fold 4. Given how expensive phones in this line are, it’s not a purchase to be taken lightly; the only way to know for sure is by comparing them. We’ll take a look at the Fold 3 vs. the Fold 4, and discuss whether the new phone is worth it below.

Is it worth it to buy the Fold 4 if I already have a Fold 3?

If you already have a Galaxy Z Fold 3, it’s not worth buying the Fold 4. There’s just not enough improvement to justify another $1,800 a year later. But, on the other hand, if you’re someone who loves the latest and greatest tech and you can get a decent trade-in credit, go for it. Otherwise, the Fold 4 is such an incremental upgrade that a layperson would be hard pressed to tell the difference between it and its predecessor. There’s also still not a slot to store the S Pen, which is a major disappointment.

That’s not to say that the Fold 4 isn’t a great phone. On the contrary, it’s one of Samsung’s flagships, so it’s quick, has two beautiful AMOLED screens, and has excellent build quality. In fact, almost every aspect of the phone has been improved over the Fold 3, but only by a teensy bit.

Here’s a brief rundown of the improvements of the Fold 4 vs. Fold 3:

  • Slightly larger screen.
  • Eight grams lighter.
  • Smaller bezels.
  • Stronger interior glass.
  • Screen protector uses a stronger adhesive.
  • Faster SoC.
  • Much better rear cameras.

Unfortunately, the Fold 4 doesn’t address one of the biggest issues with the Fold 3, which is battery life. It contains the same 4,400mAh battery, and we don’t expect that even the supposedly more power-efficient SoC will add many minutes to its life.

Hopefully, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 will bring some innovation to the line. It used to be impressive enough that it folded, but we’re ready to see Samsung take it to the next level.
