It’s important not to stare in wonder at how much thinner and lighter the upcoming PS5 Slim is when the price point has been changed. Some might say that the price change is a little sneaky in several ways, so it’s good to know where Sony is asking for a bit extra from its customers. Is the PS5 Slim priced cheaper than the OG PS5?
The PS5 Slim pricing is a general increase over the original PS5 with the standard model remaining at $499.99 but the Digital Edition getting a $50 increase from $399.99 to $449.99.
Sony’s Hiroki Totoki previously revealed during its Q1 2021 earnings call that the PS5 Standard Edition was no longer being sold at a loss but that the Digital Edition was. That could be the reason for the price hike for the Digital Edition overall. This new $449.99 price for the Digital Edition is also not what Microsoft projected during its court hearing with the FTC earlier this year.
There are also several attachments that you will need to consider if you’re interested in getting the new PS5 Slim. If you purchase the revamped PS5 Digital Edition and you want to purchase the Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive as a separate unit later on, it will cost you $79.99. That’s quite an expensive add-on, so you may want to get the standard model instead if you’re interested in Blu-ray.
The new PS5 models will come with a horizontal stand free of charge. However, if you’re the type of person who prefers to orient the console vertically, you may want to purchase the Vertical Stand accessory for $29.99.
That said, you may be able to find an older PS5 at a discount before the November release date for the newer models. Sony ran a PS5 sale during the summer that slashed the price of the console in UK, India, Ireland, and Germany. Once the current inventory for the older PS5 model runs out, this updated PS5 Slim model will be become the only model available.
