Masahiro Sakurai, the director of the Super Smash Bros. series, recently revealed that Takamaru was going to be a playable character in the latest entry of Nintendo's popular fighter.
Why didn't the samurai who made his debut on the Famicom many, many years ago make the cut? Sakurai explained in a video interview that the team feared not enough people would recognize the character, so he was made into an assist trophy instead.
For those who don't know, Takamaru was the protagonist of a game called The Mysterious Murasame Castle, which launched on the Famicom Disk System a good long while ago.
