Nintendo Switch Beats Xbox One in Market Share

Nintendo sure had a strong month in the UK. The Nintendo Switch keeps doing well for the “Big N,” even in a country where it has been traditionally difficult for Nintendo to perform well on a consistent basis, beating numbers of Microsoft’s Xbox One. Following on from the news that fans went bananas for Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze in Japan, things just keep swinging on up for Nintendo.

The sales figures in the UK for the month ending 26th May make for interesting reading. The Switch has found a place in British hearts and its market share increases each month. The console owned a grand total of 18.1% of the market, a healthy increase over the 12.5% of the previous month (via MCV). In terms of value, the Switch took a hold of 23.8% of the UK games market, over the 21.3% of the Xbox One. Despite this, however, the Switch actually moved fewer units than its Xbox counterpart. How can the Switch have owned a higher percentage of the UK market, I hear you ask? Buying games for the hybrid machine typically will set you back a prettier penny than for rival consoles, so the money made can be greater with fewer sales.

Sony Still Rules the UK

Despite Nintendo’s efforts, Sony still managed to rule the roost thanks to the likes of God of War, Detroit Become Human and the ever-popular FIFA 18. Although Nintendo proved that they weren’t monkeying around with their Switch port of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, which claimed a very admirable fourth spot on last month’s top ten, which can be seen below:
1. God of War (Sony)
2. FIFA 18 (EA)
3. Far Cry 5 (Ubisoft)
4. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (Nintendo)
5. Detroit: Become Human (Sony)
6. State of Decay 2 (Microsoft)
7. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo)
8. Fallout 4 (Bethesda)
9. LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 (Warner Bros)
10. Dark Souls Remastered (Bandai Namco)
It’s nice to see Nintendo doing well in a market that has traditionally been very tricky for them. The Switch continues to prove a resounding success, and things can get better with the release of Super Smash Bros. scheduled for the end of the year.
