Insomniac Games’ Spider Man PS4 has officially swung its way to record-breaking sales. When the game released earlier this month, it managed to sell a whopping 3.3 million copies in its first three days.
USA TODAY has reported that when Spider-Man: Homecoming came out last year, it earned an incredible $117 million at the box office in its first weekend alone. However, Spider-Man PS4 smashed this number. Multiplying the game’s average retail price by the number of copies sold returns the value of almost $200 million.
What makes this number even more impressive is that this figure doesn’t even take units included in the PlayStation 4 Pro exclusive Spider-Man Bundle into account. Therefore, it is likely that the actual value of the game’s sales is well in excess of $200 million.
Spider-Man also broke God of War‘s record of 3.1 million units sold within the first three days, set back in April, and became the fastest selling Sony-exclusive game to date. This was after the game had already broken the record for the highest number of pre-orders for a Sony title, with one million copies of Spider-Man having been pre-ordered.
Stephen Turvey, Sony’s global senior vice president of sales, had the following to say: “It’s met and exceeded all expectations. I think the company, and the campus, and our fans are super proud of it.”
The significance of this reception to a superhero game can’t be understated. The last Spider-Man title to have been published by Sony was The Amazing Spider-Man 2,which was received very poorly. Spider-Man has achieved both critical acclaim and commercial success, cementing its position among the most successful video game titles of 2018.
Spider-Man hasn’t stopped yet, though. With three DLC packs set to be released over the coming months, it seems that Insomniac Games plans to break even more records yet.
