Resident Evil 2 sales

Resident Evil 2 sales bring it to the top of UK charts

It seems that Resident Evil 2 sales have been doing amazingly well in the United Kingdom. This remake of a survival horror classic has debuted at Number 1 in the UK charts this week. In a way, this also makes it one of the rare instances where a game has had the ability to debut twice. The original PS1 release similarly debuted in first place when it dropped back in 1998. 20 years later and people still love shooting zombies in the head.

Resident Evil 2 sales doing this well probably aren’t that much of a surprise to anyone who’s had the good fortune to get their hands on the game. It’s been incredibly well-received in the gaming community so far, and we certainly had very few unkind words for our review of the game. Whether it’s nostalgia, good timing, a quality game, or all three, it seems that all of the pieces fell into place to bring this remake of a classic game to the top of the UK charts.

Here is the top ten in the United Kingdom for this week:

  1. Resident Evil 2
  2. Red Dead Redemption 2
  3. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4
  4. New Super Mario Bros U
  5. FIFA 19
  6. Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown
  7. Super Smash Bros Ultimate
  8. Mario Kart 8: Deluxe
  9. Grand Theft Auto V
  10. Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy

As GamesIndustry.biz points out, this is Capcom’s biggest release since 2017. 2017’s title was — you guessed it — another Resident Evil game (Resident Evil 7, to be specific). While Resident Evil 2 sales weren’t as big as those of Resident Evil 7, it’s still impressive enough for a remake of a 20-year-old game. It should be noted that all of the above sales figures were taken from physical sales only, so Resident Evil 2 may very well have performed even better than we know from this data.

Resident Evil 2 sold best on the PS4, accounting for 74 percent of the game’s physical sales for its first week. PlayStation owners and Resident Evil fans have always had a special relationship and it seems that it shows no signs of stopping. Perhaps the reportedly upcoming Resident Evil Netflix show can capture that same kind of magic.
