Cyberpunk 2077 will not be an Epic Games Store exclusive

Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the most anticipated games ever made, as studio CD Projekt RED’s follow-up to the amazing The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, despite the extended development time that reportedly didn’t properly begin until the studio finished the final Witcher 3 expansion pack Hearts of Stone. However, with so many major games going exclusive to the Fortnite publisher’s Epic Games Store on PC, fans are clearly worried that a Cyberpunk 2077 Epic Games Store exclusive deal may happen in the future. Fortunately for those fans, this seems unlikely to happen.

The official Cyberpunk 2077 Twitter account has been answering a lot of questions about the game from players in the last few days. It confirmed that there would be female companions, and Jackie (from the E3 gameplay trailer) will only accompany the player character for select missions. It also made fun of the idea that the game would have microtransactions, something that has been denied previously by CD Projekt RED. Finally, someone begged the developers not to make a Cyberpunk 2077 Epic Games Store exclusive happen, to which the Twitter reply was, simply, “Yeaaaaaaaaah…. Pass on that.”

Of course it was fairly unlikely to happen, not just because CD Projekt RED has a good relationship with Steam, but also because it has its own digital games store client already: GOG.com and GOG Galaxy. While the studio’s only real attempt to launch one of its own games exclusively on GOG, with Gwent spin-off Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales, ended in poor sales and the game going to Steam, it will still publish games on GOG as well.

Of course, the most high-profile game becoming an Epic Games Store exclusive right now is Metro Exodus, and there is a small connection between Cyberpunk 2077 and that game. Basically, the author behind the Metro novels called the author behind The Witcher novels “an old fool” for his attempts to sue CD Projekt RED. The same author, Dmitry Glukhovsky, had some words about Metro Exodus going exclusive to the Epic Games Store too. Hopefully the creator of Cyberpunk won’t end up doing the same…
