Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer will, reportedly, not feature any form of battle royale mode or specialist characters. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 is rumored to be the next entry in the series. The report states that the game will not include a variation of Black Ops 4 Blackout mode. Blackout was Call of Duty’s first foray into the battle royale genre.
Along with a lack of a battle royale mode, the report by Gaming INTEL‘s unnamed sources claims Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer will do away with specialists. The Call of Duty series has included characters with varying abilities since Black Ops 3, but in Black Ops 4 they chose to introduce a “Barebones” playlist to appease players who prefer a Call of Duty experience of old. A lack of specialist characters will see Modern Warfare 4 return to this style in its entirely, allowing players to use soldiers who begin on equal footing.
The report claims Modern Warfare 4 will include single-player campaign (previously confirmed by Activision president Rob Kostich), multiplayer, and a co-operative mode. If Modern Warfare 4 stuck to these aspects, it would see the series return to the composition last used by Infinity Ward for Call of Duty Infinite Warfare.
As 2019 is the year Infinity Ward is expected to make their next entry in the Call of Duty franchise, there has been plenty of speculation about what its title will be. A leak late last year, which turned out to be not credible, pointed to the game being Modern Warfare 4. However, the return of a previous Modern Warfare designer to Infinity Ward stoked further speculation about a return to the series. The resume of a Sledgehammer Games employee pointing towards them working on “the next Call of Duty – Modern Warfare release” only invited further speculation.
Leading up to the next Infinity Ward Call of Duty game, Activision appears to be promoting Modern Warfare nostalgia. This month saw the original Call of Duty Modern Warfare available for free on PS Plus. While a PEGI rating for a Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered game points towards further MW releases.
