Puyo Puyo Champions

Puyo Puyo Champions brings esports version to the West

Puyo Puyo Champions has been announced by Sega with a reveal trailer. The game is a western localization of the Puyo Puyo esports title. The game resembles Puyo Puyo Tetris but removes the famous puzzler’s visuals. Puyo Puyo Champions features a range of competitive modes, both local and online, as well as a solo mode.

Puyo Puyo Champions will launch in the West on May 7 on PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PC. The Xbox One and PC versions are unique to the West, with Puyo Puyo Esports, as it’s known in Asia, only available on Switch and PS4 in Japan. Puyo Puyo Champions will cost $9.99.

The game features 24 playable characters, a local tournament mode for eight players, and online multiplayer. The game is able to be played in, what Sega calls its “fan-favorite rule-sets”, Puyo Puyo Tsu and Puyo Puyo Fever modes. Dual audio options are also available in-game, for players who may want Japanese voice acting with English subtitles. Puyo Puyo Tetris was released way back in 2014 in Japan but experienced a resurgence when it was finally released in the West in 2017. The GameRevolution review scored the title a 4/5 rating.

The reveal of Puyo Puyo Champions may not have come as a surprise to some. The Western version of Puyo Puyo Esports was partly revealed in a leak less than a week before today’s announcement. The leak seemingly came from an upcoming magazine. Images from the magazine featuring the new game appeared to have made their way onto the internet before the intended date.

Sega, the creator of Puyo Puyo, was most recently in the news for the announcement of the Sega Genesis Mini. The re-release of one of the company’s most famed consoles was originally set for release in 2018 before a delay. The announcement revealed a September 19, 2019 release date as well as the line-up of featured games. Shortly following the announcement, Sega chief contents officer Hiroyuki Miyazaki discussed how the company may launch other mini versions depending on the sales performance of the Genesis Mini.
