Sega Genesis Mini Games

10 more Sega Genesis Mini games announced, including Mega Man: The Wily Wars

Ten more titles have been announced for the Sega Genesis Mini (Mega Drive Mini for the rest of the world). We now know 30 out of 40 of the Sega Genesis Mini’s games, and there are some great titles amongst the latest ten revealed.

The ten new games Sega revealed are:

  1. Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle
  2. Beyond Oasis (The Story of Thor in PAL territories)
  3. Ghouls ‘n Ghosts
  4. Golden Axe
  5. Mega Man: The Wily Wars
  6. Phantasy Star 4: The End of the Millennium
  7. Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball
  8. Street Fighter 2: Special Champion Edition
  9. Vectorman
  10. Wonder Boy in Monster World

It’s great to see Phantasy Star 4 amongst the announced titles. Sega’s RPG series has a style all its own and the story and art design aged a lot more favorably than many of its contemporaries. While the Phantasy Star games are pretty much standalone (though they contain references to others in the series), I hope Phantasy Star 4 isn’t the only one we get as 2 and 3 are definitely worth playing.

Of particular note amongst these ten titles is Mega Man: The Wily Wars. When the Genesis and SNES were duking it out, the Mega Man series was almost entirely a Nintendo exclusive. However, The Wily Wars allowed Genesis fans a chance to play the first three Mega Man games completely remastered (and with some new additions). If you’re a Mega Man fan, this is a great way to get a new perspective on Mega Man 1, 2, and 3 if you’ve never played it before.

The other 20 titles that have been announced for the Sega Genesis Mini are:

  • Altered Beast
  • Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse
  • Castlevania: Bloodlines
  • Comix Zone
  • Contra: Hard Corps
  • Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine
  • Earthworm Jim
  • Ecco the Dolphin
  • Gunstar Heroes
  • Landstalker
  • Shining Force
  • Shinobi 3: Return of the Ninja Master
  • Sonic the Hedgehog
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 2
  • Space Harrier 2
  • Streets of Rage 2
  • Super Fantasy Zone
  • Thunder Force 3
  • ToeJam & Earl
  • World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck

The Sega Genesis Mini is shaping up to be a better value than the NES and SNES Mini and the PlayStation Classic since each of those consoles only came with about 20 games each. Additionally, at least in the US, the Genesis didn’t get nearly as much love as the SNES so the Mini might be a lot of people’s first experience with the console.

I only had a SNES when I was a kid, so I didn’t get a chance to play some of the great titles the Genesis has to offer. I recently got together the Megazord-like Genesis (model 1 high-def model of course), 32X, and Sega CD and have been enjoying the hell out of the games I missed back in the 1990s. My only wish is that the Genesis Mini featured some 32X and Sega CD games because there’s a ton of gems on those very underappreciated addons.

You can get your hands on a Sega Genesis Mini on September 19 for $79.99.
