It seems that Valve’s digital distribution service Steam has been taking a beating as of late, with a number of games becoming exclusive to rival Epic’s new game store. However, one big game that will be coming to Steam is Gears 5. Microsoft has confirmed that a Gears 5 Steam version will be coming at launch.
Microsoft announced today that Gears 5 would be coming to Steam in addition to the Windows Store. The game joins the “Definitive Editions” of the first three Age of Empires games, Killer Instinct, and the Halo Master Chief Collection as Xbox Game Studios games on Valve’s service.
The launch of Gears 5 and the Age of Empires games on Steam comes as part some changes at Microsoft. These changes see Xbox Game Studios games being launched on multiple PC stores at the same time.
“We know millions of PC gamers trust Steam as a great source to buy PC games,” stated Xbox head Phil Spencer. “And we’ve heard the feedback that PC gamers would like choice.”
In addition to this, Spencer also acknowledged that the existence of other stores on PC. “We also know that there are other stores on PC, and we are working to enable more choice in which store you can find our Xbox Game Studios titles in the future,” he said.
This statement indicates that Microsoft is working to put Xbox Game Studios games on services such as the Epic Games Store. Epic Games was the developer of the first four Gears of War games, including the prequel Gears of War: Judgement, before the Coalition took over development of the newer games. Gears 5 eventually appearing on their game store would be a rather fitting turn of events.
Of course, with the announcement, the question remains of whether the previous Gears of War games will also make it to Steam, and even the Epic Games Store. Hopefully these and other Xbox Game Studios games eventually make their way over.
