A Gears 5 release date was announced at Microsoft’s E3 2019 conference and as predicted it will release this year. It’s only been a year since the game was announced at E3 2018 and it’s a big surprise that a Gears of War 5 release date is coming so soon after its existence was revealed.
Gears 5 will focus on Kait Diaz’s journey to discover what happened with her family and the secrets behind the origin of the Locust. This game marks the first time the series features a female protagonist as the player character for the campaign. We’ll still see familiar faces like JD Fenix and Delmont Walker, but the focus is squarely on Kait.
This is also the first game in the series that is simply called “Gears“ instead of “Gears of War.” Although fans of the series have been using the shortened version for years, Xbox marketing decided to make it the official title with this entry. Kind of a weird move, but okay.
We also got our first look at the Gears 5 co-op multiplayer Escape mode, which tasks three players with infiltrating a Locust hive. Players will need to watch the backs of their allies, as Locust can appear from any angle. It looked like an expansion of Horde, combining an onslaught of enemies with objectives to complete.
Gears 5 will release on Xbox One and PC (through Steam) on September 10. The game’s Ultimate Edition and Xbox Game Pass members will get to play four days early. This will make the earlier release date
There will be a multiplayer Tech Test on July 17, giving players the first taste of PvP. Horde fans will get a chance to try the wave-based mode during the testing phase in August.
The fifth numbered Gears of War game isn’t the only thing to look forward to, as a movie is also in the works with F. Scott Frazier as the writer.
