Gears 5 story trailer revealed at Gamescom 2019

Less than three weeks away from the Gears 5 release date on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Microsoft finally revealed a Gears 5 story trailer at Gamescom 2019. The trailer showed off new locations and mechanics coming to the game.

Set to Nine Inch Nail’s “Head like a Hole,” the Gears 5 story reveal trailer showcased some of the psychologically troubling visions experienced by protagonist Kait Diaz, who shares some kind of mysterious connection with the Swarm enemy faction. We also got a look at some of Gears 5’s new environments, including snowy mountains covered in the bones of a giant creatures, frozen lakes, and ruined cities. The trailer also shows Kait riding a wind sail-towed vehicle across a few wasteland environments.

The trailer isn’t much to go on, but it’s the first Microsoft has revealed about Gears 5’s story. Rod Fergusson, studio head at Gears 5 developer The Coalition, added onstage during the Gamescom 2019 opening night livestream that Gears 5 has “a two-sided story.” On one hand, the game will focus on how the war with the Swarm returns to the player Sera. On the other, Gears 5 will tell players about what’s going on inside Kait’s head. Fergusson added that Gears 5 is “probably the best Gears game we’ve ever made.”

Earlier today, Microsoft unveiled the return of Gears’ signature wave-based PvE component with Gears 5 Horde Mode. Gears 5 brings Ultimate abilities to Horde Mode, which give each of the playable characters a unique and powerful ability to use in sticky situations. A Gears 5 Halo character pack was also revealed, which will allow players to add Spartan characters from the Halo franchise to Horde Mode. This joins the game’s Sarah Connor Terminator Dark Fate collaboration in bringing crossover characters to the game. Microsoft previously revealed Gears 5 limited edition Xbox One consoles and peripherals, as well as the Gears 5 Arcade Deathmatch mode and a Gears 5 map builder.
