Report: Ghost of Tsushima release date delayed as Sony shuffles spring 2020 lineup

It seems that Naughty Dog delaying The Last of Us 2 may have also caused Sony to push back the release yet another big exclusive. New reports indicate that the Ghost of Tsushima release date has been pushed back in light of The Last of Us 2‘s new release window.

The report comes from Kotaku’s Jason Schreier, who earlier on broke the news of The Last of Us 2‘s delay. According to Schreier’s sources, Sucker Punch’s open-world samurai game was originally supposed to be released during the first half of 2020. However, the delay to Naughty Dog’s game has apparently caused it to be moved to the latter half of the year.

The new release date for Ghost of Tsushima does put it close to the release of Sony’s upcoming PlayStation 5 console. Despite this, however, Schreier stated that people shouldn’t expect Sony to move the game over to its next-generation console: It looks like Ghost of Tsushima will still be arriving on PlayStation 4.

While a game being delayed because of another game may sound a bit counter-intuitive to some, Sony most likely does not want to have to big exclusives out at the same time. The company wouldn’t want the games to compete against each other at retail, after all.

With this in mind, these delays may actually work out in Sony’s favor. The first half of 2020 looks to be quite loaded with a number of big triple-A titles. Final Fantasy 7 Remake launches on March 3, just a few weeks after The Last of Us 2‘s originally planned release date. Meanwhile, Cyberpunk 2020 arrives just a little over a month after on April 16. These delays give Sony’s games, especially The Last of Us 2, some space to breathe in light of these other release. Additionally, Ghost of Tsushima‘s delay gives Sony something to fill the months before the PlayStation 5 hits, and something that could potentially serve as a swan song for the PlayStation 4.
