What comes after the launch of Death Stranding may not yet have been decided. but there’s a chance that it could be something we’ve never seen from Hideo Kojima before. The next Kojima Productions game might not be a game at all, as studio head, founder, and legendary game developer Hideo Kojima has indicated that his company is going to move into making movies at some point in the future.
Kojima Productions was very recently featured as the subject of a BBC Newsbeat video that went behind the scenes at the studio during the final days of production for Death Stranding. While quite a few people from the studio were interviewed, Mr. Kojima was, of course, among them, and he had some surprising facts to reveal about the next Kojima Productions game.

“In the future, Kojima Productions will start making films,” Mr. Kojima revealed. “If you can do one thing well, then you can do everything well.”
Hideo Kojima is well-known for cinematic experiences, stretching all the way back to his Metal Gear Solid days. A noted cinephile, he may well have pushed the limits for what’s an acceptable length for cutscenes with a nearly two-hour-long ending sequence in Death Stranding. While he’s already planning his next game, he’s also looking to move into other mediums. That is, however, if they can be considered separate mediums at all.
“I think within the next few years, gaming will move on to streaming,” Kojima-san continued. “Movies, drama, and games will all be streamed and you’ll enjoy them on your iPad or iPhone or a screen anytime, anywhere. When that happens games, films, and drama will have to compete in the same space. I’m very interested in the new format of game that will appear on there and that’s what I want to take on.”
The next Kojima Productions game might be a game, a movie, or something that blends the two mediums like Death Stranding. We can’t say for sure what it’s going to be, but it’s sure to be a wild ride. You can watch BBC Newsbeat’s Death Stranding: Inside Kojima Productions below.
