Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey

Rumor: Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok could be PS5 launch title

With the buzz of new Pokemon and good Star Wars hitting our home consoles, it can be easy to forget that we’re just a year away from a new generation hitting the shelves. Both Sony’s PlayStation 5 and Microsoft’s Project Scarlett are rumored to hit by the end of 2020, and new consoles need new games in recognizable franchises. Ubisoft is always happy to oblige, and if rumors are to be believed, it seems that a new Assassin’s Creed, known as Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok will be raiding both generations at the end of next year.

Long rumored to be focusing on the Viking experience, what is known in some circles as Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok should follow in the footsteps of Origins and Odyssey from earlier this gen. The juiciest part of this rumor is not that the game exists, but when it will be announced. According to several sources, including Imran Khan on a Kinda Funny broadcastRagnarok will reach the public consciousness in February as part of a wider Sony reveal for their PlayStation 5. This implies that Ubisoft is aiming to have the new AC locked and loaded for a Fall release, possibly as a cross-gen title.

As for the game itself, Ragnarok will feature mythical elements from Norse mythology, possibly putting it up against God of War and its inevitable next-gen sequel. The story reportedly focuses on “a revenge quest” that includes some naval combat, but not as much as in Origins or Odyssey. You can supposedly choose between a male or female protagonist, but they’re the same character storywise, which is a departure from how Odyseey handled its playable characters. Finally, the Brotherhood system could be returning, allowing you to recruit and send out assassins to do your dirty work like in the low-key best entry in the franchise.

None of these facts have been confirmed as of yet, but similar leaks in the past and the arc of the franchise as a whole give them a bit of credibility. Whether its Ragnarok or another title, we’re almost assuredly going to see some more Ubisoft-approved stabbing in the very near future. If you need your fix in the meantime, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey just hit Google Stadia during its launch this week.
