With information continuing to trickle in regarding Blizzard’s online shooter sequel, players are wondering about the Overwatch 2 beta release date and whether a playable public beta is actually happening. In a recent Overwatch 2 AMA on Reddit with Blizzard developers on the sequel’s team, it was confirmed that a beta is “almost certainly” happening. The big question is then, when will the Overwatch 2 beta happen?
What is the Overwatch 2 beta release date?
In a recent Ask-Me-Anything question and answer session on Reddit, Blizzard developer and Overwatch 2 Technical Director John Lafleur (or blizz_jlafleur on Reddit) was asked whether a beta for the eagerly-anticipated game was happening and he confirmed: “almost certainly, yes.”
The bad news is that he couldn’t offer any firm details on a release date for the beta. As he put it in his answer, “if I knew when, I couldn’t tell you. If I told you, I’d have to kill you.”
This, unfortunately, tracks with everything else Blizzard has teased so far about Overwatch 2, as the game’s release date is still a big question mark, other than the near-certainty that it’s not coming out this year. While it’s certain that a playable beta will launch well in advance of the main game, so it’s conceivable that an Overwatch 2 beta release could happen in 2021, it’s probably best that players don’t get their hopes up. It’s Blizzard after all, they like to take things slow.
Nevertheless, a recent stream showed off a lot about Overwatch 2’s PvP mode, including new looks at various maps, how crowd control moves are being readdressed, new changes to Torbjorn and the healer HUD, how it’ll be a 5v5 game rather than 6v6, as it is in Overwatch. Furthermore, earlier this year players got a look at the redesigned skins for McCree, Reaper, Pharah, and Widowmaker for Overwatch 2.
