The new anime film The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf launched on Netflix today, and there’s plenty for fans of the franchise to like. Among the usual dose of bloody action and horrifying creatures, there’s a beloved familiar face that pops up in the movie’s final scene. Beware, as this is your official spoiler warning. Is Geralt in The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf anime?
Yes, we’ve got good news for fans of everyone’s favorite rogue Witcher: Geralt of Rivia returns in The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf. The bad news is he only appears in a couple of scenes. However, it does flesh out his character in interesting ways.
If you’ve seen the film, you’ll notice that Geralt looks very different from what we’re used to in the games and the TV show. That’s because this anime takes place decades before he became the monster hunter we know and love. Here, he’s a meek, frail young boy, training at Kaer Morhen under the watch of Deglan. In fact, we only find out that he’s Geralt right at the end, in a surprise twist.
By the end, Vesemir is the only surviving Witcher after Tetra’s forces of evil destroyed their home at Kaer Morhen. Lady Zerbst, Vesemir’s lover, sends the surviving children to flee, and Vesemir catches up to them after the final battle. This is where Geralt’s identity is revealed, as Vesemir addresses this tiny, hairless boy by the name we all know.
Geralt’s role in the film is very small — in fact, he barely speaks — but his appearance establishes his relationship with his mentor, Vesemir. Kim Bodnia will play Vesemir in season 2 of the show. Therefore, flashbacks will likely explore the aftermath of Nightmare of the Wolf’s exciting ending.
