Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl walking Pokemon bug is trapping players

Ever since the release of Pokemon Yellow, walking Pokemon have been following players as a staple of the popular RPG series. In the Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl remakes for Nintendo Switch, however, they can be a real danger to Trainers’ health. The walking Pokemon bug is responsible for trapping users in potentially inescapable areas, leaving those affected in desperate need of a solution.

How to fix the Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl walking Pokemon glitch

After a walking Pokemon follows and pushes its trainer, trapping them in place, use these methods to get out:

  • On the main menu screen, hold Up + X + B  to recover a backup save.
    • This reverts the game state to two saves back, which may not work depending on the actions taken while stuck.
  • Warp to the Underground and catch a Ralt that knows Teleport.
    • The Ralt should be below Level 27 for the best chance to know this move.
  • Press Y and enter the Union Room to trade for a Pokemon with Teleport.
    • Players must have gone downstairs in a Pokemon Center to unlock this functionality.
  • Grind in the Underground to level up a Pokemon that can learn Teleport or Fly.
    • Dig won’t help aboveground, though Teleport and Fly will.
    • Teleport should be the priority, as this glitch can happen before unlocking Fly.

Redditor u/MiseDawg became stuck behind two NPCs in Veilstone after their walking Pokemon, Skuntank, saw fit to push them into an inescapable space. The thread mentions that they plan to contact Nintendo, so hopefully, it won’t be long before players receive a fix in the form of an update, patch, or hotfix. Until then, it’s probably best to avoid assigning a walking Pokemon in Shining Pearl and Brilliant Diamond.
