The end of April may nearly be upon us, but that doesn’t mean it’s too late for the March US gaming sales data. Despite console shortages, Xbox Series X|S became the best-selling US console for March 2022, and even managed its best-ever March performance in both units and dollar sales.
How well is the Xbox Series X|S doing?
In terms of dollar sales, the Xbox series consoles were the best-selling US console of March 2022, and they’re also the best-selling US console of 2022 so far according to NPD. Microsoft had its best-ever March performance in terms of console sales for both units and dollar sales, beating the previous records set by the Xbox 360 in 2011 (units) and the Xbox One in 2014 (dollar sales). It was beaten by the Nintendo Switch in both categories in terms of units sold, though, although all consoles are currently hit by shortages. The Xbox Elite Series 2 Wireless Controller was also the best-selling accessory of March and continues to be the best-selling accessory of 2022 so far.
Despite shortages, the Xbox Series X|S has sold 13.87 million lifetime units worldwide according to VGChartz. At the equivalent 17-month point in its lifetime, the Xbox 360 had sold 9.38 million units. Figures weren’t given for the Xbox One. Xbox General Manager Aaron Greenberg thanked “all the people who have helped support the growth and adoption of Xbox so far this generation” but acknowledged there was “lots of work ahead” as console shortages continue to affect sales.
Thanks to all the people who have helped support the growth and adoption of Xbox so far this generation. Lots of work ahead and hopefully supply continues to improve globally as well. https://t.co/4J4PVDOexb

Xbox game sales continued to be dominated by Elden Ring, with Call of Duty: Vanguard keeping the second spot. Only two new releases made it into the top 10, namely WWE 2K22 in third and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands in fourth. A notable omission from the top 10 was MLB The Show 22, although as this game was offered on Xbox Game Pass on the day of release, this would have taken a massive toll on sales on the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One.
In other news, Diablo immortal will get cross-play and cross-progression between PC and mobile. The game will be released on mobile platforms at the start of June with an open beta beginning on PC on the same day. Elsewhere, Splatoon 2 DLC and three more Sega Genesis games have been added to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.
