Yakuza Creator Quit Sega Because He Wants To Be a Developer, Not a CEO

Yakuza creator Toshihiro Nagoshi has revealed that the reason he quit Sega and created his own studio was because he wanted to be a game developer first and didn’t “want to be the CEO of Sega.” The 57-year-old industry veteran also provided some details on the next game he has planned through NetEase and how it will be similar to “a Quentin Tarantino film.”

Why Toshihiro Nagoshi Left Sega After 30 Years

In an interview with German website 4Players, Nagoshi suggests that he was being groomed to be the next Sega CEO after he reached the top levels of management. However, he made it clear to the current Sega owner that he didn’t want that position, describing himself as “a player and a game maker.” It came to a point that he believed it was better for him to leave Sega and create Nagoshi Studios instead. In a win-win situation, this allowed Sega to groom someone else as a future CEO while giving him the freedom to create the games he’s always wanted.

As for what we can expect from Nagoshi’s next game, it’s clear that it won’t be mobile game. He was quite clear with NetEase, despite the developer being known for mobile games, that he would not be doing that. On the other side, though, the Chinese company expects Nagoshi to create a “console bestseller.” Similar to the Yakuza series, his new game will “contain violence as a game element” and have “room for humor.” He wants to make a game that’s both silly and serious, nothing that’s too much like a thriller or a horror game.

Nagoshi doesn’t say when we might see the first snippets of his upcoming game, but he says that he’s not the “type to hold back something” and would reveal it much sooner than other developers would.

In other news, Pentiment pre-orders and Xbox Game Pass pre-installs start today, and Gotham Knights release date has surprisingly been moved forward by four days.
