[Update] Head of Xbox Phil Spencer has spoken out on Microsoft's purchase of Minecraft, shedding a bit of light on what this means for the future of the company's gaming platform. Check out his video announcement above.
[Original] Minecraft creator and Mojang head Markus "Notch" Persson has confirmed that Microsoft is purchasing his studio, confirming the rumor suggesting as much that began circling the web earlier this month.
In a post on the studio's official site, Mojang's Owen Hill explained:
Yes, the deal is real. Mojang is being bought by Microsoft.
It was reassuring to see how many of your opinions mirrored those of the Mojangstas when we heard the news. Change is scary, and this is a big change for all of us. It’s going to be good though. Everything is going to be OK. <3
Will we see support stop for platforms that don't bear the Microsoft branding? That doesn't appear to be the case, as Owen added, "There’s no reason for the development, sales, and support of the PC/Mac, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, Vita, iOS, and Android versions of Minecraft to stop. Of course, Microsoft can’t make decisions for other companies or predict the choices that they might make in the future."
A lot of questions still have yet to be answered, as Microsoft's purchase will undoubtedly affect not only the future of Minecraft, but any and all other project Mojang currently has in the cooker. As such, be sure to stay tuned to GameRevolution for all the details.
