The Nintendo Switch‘s first year sales have surpassed those of the PS2 in Japan, with the console continuing to be extraordinarily popular in the region.
The Switch shifted 3.26 million units compared to the PS2’s 3.02 million units, putting Nintendo’s new handheld/home console hybrid ahead of Sony’s classic system. Considering that the PS2 is the best-selling console of all time, these figures are hugely impressive for Nintendo, showcasing just how much the company has turned things around since the Wii U.
Back in December, it was revealed that the Nintendo Switch had sold more than 10 million units worldwide, putting it on track to beat the PS4’s launch year. The PS4 had reached the 10 million milestone in August 2014, nearly a year removed from its November 2013 launch date, though it also had the added benefit of the Holiday season just around the corner from its release. The Switch’s sales do not account for the 2017 Christmas period.

The Nintendo Switch’s continued momentum will hopefully carry over into 2018, with the upcoming Pokemon RPG slated for release next year and the company undoubtedly having a few more tricks up its sleeve. The Switch has certainly been helped by the release of heavy hitters in the form of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey, and from this vantage point it seems as though next year will be a quieter one for the console, so whether or not it manages to contain beating expectations remains to be seen.
