Will Crash Bandicoot 4 get a PS5 upgrade?

Wanting to know if Crash Bandicoot 4 will get a PS5 upgrade depends on a few things. It is dependent on whether the game is coming to PS5 at all and if Activision would be willing to give players a next-gen upgrade for no cost. So is Crash 4 coming to next-gen systems?

As of this writing, Crash 4 has not been confirmed for the PS5. As such, you aren’t going to get a native PS5 version and no associated next-gen PS5 upgrade.

However, the game will be playable on the PS5 thanks to backwards compatibility. According to Eurogamer, all PS5 games that have been submitted after July 13, 2020 will have to run on PS5. Sony has also said on the PlayStation Blog in March that an “overwhelming majority” of PS4 games will be playable on PS5. Sony’s Jim Ryan then followed up a few months later and told the Washington Post that 99% of PS4 games will run on the PS5.

It gets better as there is a high likelihood that the PS4 version of Crash 4 would run significantly better on the PS5. According to Digital Foundry, the game has an unlocked frame rate, meaning that extra horsepower would boost the game to 60 frames per second, which is up from the roughly 30 frames per second in the base PS4 version. It also has dynamic resolution scaling and that could result in the game running at its max resolution. Since both the frame rate and resolution aren’t locked, it has the capability to run at its peak on the PS5.

Granted you have it on the internal fast SSD in the PS5, it will also probably load a lot faster, too. According to Digital Foundry’s tests, many current-gen Xbox One games load significantly faster on the upcoming hardware so it would be easy to imagine that Crash 4 would also benefit from that faster drive. Its current load times aren’t drastically long, but they are long enough to wish for a more capable solid state drive.
