Red Dead Redemption 2 Shipped 17 Million Units Since Launch

Rockstar’s new cowboy hit, Red Dead Redemption 2 shipped 17 million units since its launch on October 26. The sequel has been breaking sales records which started with having the most successful opening weekend in entertainment history.

The new Red Dead then went on to topple Black Ops 4 sales in Japan and have the strongest second week of 2018 in the U.K. This makes it no surprise that parent company Take-Two Interactive Software has reported strong fiscal results.

These impressive figures of already having Red Dead Red Redemption 2 shipped 17 million means it has shipped more units in eight days than the original Red Dead Redemption did in eight years. Take-Two released the following management comments as part of its report:

“On October 26th, Rockstar Games launched its highly-anticipated Red Dead Redemption 2, the label’s first game built from the ground up for the current console generation. Red Dead Redemption 2 has received outstanding reviews, with numerous critics awarding the title a perfect score. The title is now tied with Grand Theft Auto V as the highest rated title on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with a 97 Metacritic score. A massive commercial success, Red Dead Redemption 2 has set numerous records, including achieving the biggest opening weekend in the history of entertainment, with over $725 million in retail sell-through during its first three days. Red Dead Redemption 2 sold-in more units in its first 8 days than the original blockbuster Red Dead Redemption sold in its first 8 years and, as of today, the title has sold-in over 17 million units worldwide.”

Because of this, Take-Two is raising its financial outlook for 2019. Another major factor cited for the financial success was Grand Theft Auto Online which is a constant source of revenue for the company. With this in mind, it will likely receive an even more significant boost when Red Dead Online‘s beta launches later this month.
