Spider-Man: Miles Morales Xbox easter egg shoutout

Spider-Man: Miles Morales has a weird Xbox easter egg

Spider-Man: Miles Morales has a surprising Xbox easter egg tucked away in the game — a strange choice considering that this new PS5 game is currently exclusive to PlayStation consoles.

The recent launch of the PS5 also brought with it the debut of Spider-Man: Miles Morales, a brand-new game that took players into a universe with one of the most popular people who dons the Spider-Man mantle aside from Peter Parker himself. A lot of people are playing this new Spider-Man game and it’s packed with a bunch of cool easter eggs, but we’ve recently discovered one of the strangest surprises yet: an apparent shoutout to Xbox.

The Spider-Man: Miles Morales controller is a strange monstrosity

The Spider-Man: Miles Morales Xbox easter egg can be seen at the beginning of the game. One of the many locations players can visit is Miles Morales’ room and it happens to have a box with some games and game controllers in it. What’s actually in this box, however, is very weird.

To start, Miles appears to own several copies of the same game for some reason. We can’t quite tell what the game is, but it doesn’t appear to match any games that we know. What’s even weirder, however, is the controller: it looks like a Dualshock 4 at first glance, but there are several strange differences. The analog sticks seem too far apart for the DualShock 4 controller and the buttons on the right use the same symbols and colors as the Xbox controller.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a first-party PlayStation game, meaning that it has launched exclusively on Sony’s PS4 and PS5. As a result, it’s curious why a PlayStation controller wasn’t chosen outright by Insomniac. Other controllers like the Dreamcast have used the ABXY buttons before, but the buttons and coloring of the controller in Miles Morales are all Xbox.

Miles’ controller isn’t a 1:1 replication of any actual product we’ve seen on the market. It’s also rather strange that Insomniac Games didn’t decide to use the new PS5 DualSense controller for Mile’s room, although that could be because the game is a cross-gen release and it’s tricky to get the DualSense to work on a PS4.

This odd game controller could also be heralding a possible multiplatform release in the future. It’s a big stretch, but Sony has recently shown a willingness to port its console exclusives to other platforms with the launch of Horizon Zero Dawn for PCs earlier this year. Will we see Spider-Man: Miles Morales on PC or Xbox? We can’t say for sure, but one thing is certain: Miles definitely owns a weird-looking game controller.
